Swanton Morley v North Elmham - Mid Norfolk Sunday League - RJ Bidewell Div 3
North Elmham win by 30 runs
North Elmham: Aidan Goward 6-15, George Bridges 17no, Graver 16
Swanton Morley: Sebin 3-10, H Daniels 3-19, 17, J Perkins 18
On their first Sunday outing of the season, Elmham were invited to bat on a slow Swanton wicket that always looked as though it was going to be hard work to score runs on. The start was steady and the openers put on 15 before Hall (6) was bowled. The promising young J. Laing then joined A. Graver (both playing their first game for Elmham) and the pair added another 15 in 8 overs before Laing (3) departed. Two wickets then fell in as many overs as O. Hall (0) and the assured Graver (16) fell to H Daniels. A. Kay and A. Goward added a quick 20 before Goward (7) was trapped LBW. Kay (12), O. Turner (4) and P. Bridges (1) all departed in the space of three overs to have Elmham on 69-8 with 27 overs gone. The experienced D. Yaxley then joined young George Bridges at the crease and pair then played out an excellent partnership, with Yaxley offering stubborn resistance up at one end and Bridges playing a controlled, disciplined innings at the other.
They saw Elmham through to end their 40 overs on 91, with Bridges not out 17 and Yaxley still on 0, which in no way tells the story of this 78 year olds effort in this match!
Swanton Morley’s reply was strangled at the outset, with opening bowlers A. Kay and A. Graver both bowling accurately. It was Graver who made the initial breakthrough that his excellent line and length fully deserved. The pair worked hard and kept the runs down to 18 after 11 overs when Kay got finally took a deserved wicket. The first bowling change saw Aidan Goward replace Andy Kay and after an initial wayward over costing 9 runs, his heroics began following the drinks interval. The young bowler took the Swanton innings apart, as, with his next 4 overs he contrived to take 6 wickets at a cost of just 6 runs finishing with figures of 5-1-15-6. A. Kay took the final wicket of Swanton Morley’s innings after an inspirational field change saw the batsman caught just inside the rope with the skipper Kevin Hall not having to move an inch to take it. All of the Elmham team contributed well and can feel very proud of their performance, the fielding in particular was extremely keen with no obvious gaps and credit must be given to new Sunday Captain Kevin Hall for the way he handled the side.
