Gillingham v NECC - 28.7.2012

Maule steps up as Elmham earn easy win at Gillingham

North Elmham (25points) beat Gillingham (5points) by 120 runs in the Norfolk Cricket League Six.

North Elmham - E.Maule 71, C.Slabbert 35, J.Dagless 30 & 27-3, R.Websdale 9-4

Gillingham - J.Aldridge 27-4, A.Stevens 18-2, J.Barber 17

Ed MauleNorth Elmham won the toss and elected to bat on a very green, mossy pitch that looked likely to cause problems for both batting sides. Malherbe started well and was soon driving and pulling to the boundary as he raced to 27 before trying to pull a delivery that died on him trapping him plumb LBW. Olivier then came in and despite being dropped and nearly run out for no score. was soon bowled by the accurate Aldridge for 1. The Gillingham bowlers then got on top as the Elmham batsmen struggled to find runs. Websdale soon lost patience and was caught off Aldridge for 6 trying to hit over the top. Slabbert and Maule then stabilised the innings and were soon finding the boundary as the run rate

again rose healthily. This pair added 68 before Slabbert was bowled by Barber for 35. Dagless joined Maule and despite a rocky start was soon finding the gaps with some lovely leg side shots. Maule continued playing with a beautiful straight bat when required but was using the cut shot well. He soon reached his first 50 for the club as Elmham looked to build a score close to 200. On 71 Maule was caught off Stevens trying to push the score on and was soon followed by Dagless for 30 who was caught behind off Aldridge. The Elmham tail then failed to find the few runs required to claim maximum batting points and ended the innings on 198-8. Elmham skipper Sinclair was pleased with this score on a tricky pitch and noted that in every game there has always been someone in the top order who has stepped up and delivered with the bat. This time Maule was the star but with good contributions from Slabbert and Dagless.

Roy WebsdaleIn reply Gillingham were tied down from the start against some tight bowling from Hunt and Sinclair. After the first 10 overs Gillingham were on 18 runs when Elmham had made 39. Sinclair in particular was bowling well having only conceded 1 run. Hunt made the first break through with Dagless taking a tricky catch at mid off to remove Barber for 17. New batsman Aldridge was always looking to hit the bad ball as he raced to 14 before new bowler R.Websdale bowled him with a beauty that cut in. This brought danger man Smith to the wicket who had almost single handedly won Gillingham the game earlier in the season. Again Websdale bowled impeccable lines that restricted any scoring shots and those that were made were well stopped by the Elmham fielders who have been superb all season. Eventually Smith tried to hit over the top only to find the old warrior Tony Garrod at deepish mid wicket who never looked like he would drop the catch. This increased the pressure on Gillingham as Patrick's frustration resulted in him calling for a suicidal run to mid on only to be sensibly sent back as an accurate throw back to the wicket keeper found him yards out. Gillingham skipper Hoare threw the bat for a few overs but never looked comfortable and finally was again well caught by Dagless off Websdale for 12. Dagless and Websdale then ran through the tail leaving Gillingham (who only had 10 players) all out for 78 after 31 overs with the pick of the Elmham bowlers being Roy Websdale with 4 wickets for 9 runs. James Dagless also made a good all round contribution with 30 runs, 3 wickets and 2 catches.

Next week - North Elmham are home to Happisburgh (start 2 o'clock)
